Their gonna put you in the movies. Buck Owens 76 Passes on 03/25/06

BUCK OWENS PASSES AWAY 03-25-2006 KUZZ Radio owner
and Country Music Hall of Fame musician Alvis E.
"Buck" Owens died early Saturday morning at his Bakersfield,
CA home. His family says Buck died in his sleep and the cause
of death is not yet known. Buck was born on August 12,
1929 in Sherman, Texas. The son of a sharecropper,
Buck traveled with his family to the Phoenix, Arizona area
in 1937 as they searched for a better life. Eventually, they
traveled to California's San Joaquin Valley, doing farm work.
At a young age Buck vowed that when he grew up, he would
not be poor. He found a way out of his family's poverty
through his musical talent. That talent blossomed after Buck
moved to Bakersfield in 1951.Within months he was a
member of the hottest honky-tonk band in town,
Bill Woods & The Orange Blossom Playboys, who held forth
at the legendary Blackboard night club. He began playing a
Fender Telecaster guitar, which provided a unique new sound
in country music. Soon he was playing for recording sessions
at Capitol Records. His first session as a leader came in 1957,
but the session produced no hits Shortly thereafter, Buck began
his other career, as a broadcaster. He moved to the Tacoma,
Washington suburb of Puyallup and bought part-interest in a
radio station, where he worked as a DJ andad salesman as well
as playing gigs in the area. He also had a live TV showin Tacoma.
Buck's first Top 10 record, "Under Your Spell Again," was released
in 1959. In 1960, he sold his interests in Washington state and
returned to Bakersfield, which was his home until he died.
From 1962 to 1968 Buck released a series of #1 records that
established him as one of the greatest country entertainers
of all time. (from Buck owens Website) 032506

Wow, that evokes a jumble of ambivalent feelings. My parents watched "Hee Haw" every. frickin'. Saturday. night. at 7:00, which I solely blame for my dislike of post-60's country music.

RIP, Buck. You were A-OK even though your TV show ruined my childhood.

My dad loved watching "Hee Haw"
Which was definitely a C&W
spin off of Rowan & Martin's TV Show "Laugh In" So it rubbed off on me. A lot of serious talent was on that show.
One of the first serious bands I was in While living in Santa Cruz, Ca. "The Rock-a-Fella$" covered
Act Naturally, Love's going live here and an instrumental called
Buck-a-Roo. He will be missed.

I didn't hear that Buck Owens had died (or maybe I thought he already had...). Didn't know he'd been a DJ, too - seems to be a prevalent disease now, for former performers (teehee).

Every time I hear about that place, Bakersfield, I think of the Rolling Stones song (WAS it their song?) about the "Girl with the Faraway Eyes". And isn't that where Little Bill is from? (My books are still packed away in boxes, so I can't check the title. Something about "Last Stop, Bakersfield", isn't it?)

Buck Owens will be missed. One of The Best shows I got to see was at the Franklin County Fair (Tri-Cities, Eastern WA) when I was a child ...
The band was cookin' on the band stand ... There were cameras flashing every where ... Remember, we were small town hicks & Buck was the Real Deal ... Anyway, right in the middle of a tune, he stopps the band - steps out & has a Photo Opp. for anyone who had a camera ... this lasts for what seems forever ... Then, Buck steps back w/ the band & starts right where they left off ... no hesitation - flawless ... I think I was all of about 8 years old - but will always remember this consumate professional.
